Last Friday, conspiracy theorists received their gift from the Malaysian government on page 8A of the New York Times (NYT). On that day, the NYT’s headline read, “Malaysia Declares Loss of Flight 370 in Indian Ocean an Accident.” Malaysian Air (MH) Flight 370 becomes the latest in a line of airplane tragedies that started with Amelia Earhart’s disappearance in 1937. That list also includes Korean Air Flight 007 in 1983 and TWA Flight 800 in 1996. The conspiracy theorists have another case in...

Earlier this year, I discovered through Facebook that Chavon Hodges had died. Now, that name will more than likely mean nothing to you, but I had the unique opportunity to meet her on Labor Day Weekend 2010 at Washington National Airport (DCA). Over that weekend, I spent about 60 hours trying to assist her in my role as a Travelers Aid volunteer at the airport.

Chavon had muscular dystrophy and so to fly she needed a viable source of breathable oxygen. That viable source came in the form...

So, I have to ask, the following question: Why do individuals, who are probably very nice and polite in their daily lives become very distant, cold, even a bit mean when in an airport?

I know the answer. Today, traveling using commercial aviation is not very exciting, as it once was, but simply stressful. But I have to counter with the following thought. Why are these same people just as cold when offered a kind word?

Have we become this insensitive? The answer may be...

That Saturday, airlines moved planes quickly from the gates (this is a shot of DCA's North Pier)...

As the day went on the weather got worse (this photo was taken around 3pm on 8/27)...

By late afternoon, only a few people were left in the terminal... some would be stuck there for the night.

By 6pm Saturday night, DCA's gates were empty, the weather conditions were becoming...

Friday night (9/23/2011), I was reminded why passengers often face poor customer service when dealing with the airline of their choice as I was verbally accosted by a passenger. I have been thinking about customer service and the airline industry for some time. Friday's experience simply brought it to the forefront. I have come to a conclusion that is very ironic. It is something U.S. airline passengers will not want to hear. Simply put, "Look in the mirror, the enemy is us!"

Last week, I took the opportunity to describe my motivation to serve as a Travelers Aid volunteer at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Yes, every Friday from 6pm and somedays lasting until midnight to 1am, I can be found at the airport assisting passengers with various needs. I have been volunteering at DCA since 2003.

In the spring of 2001, I was unemployed, frustrated, and feeling depressed about the situation. I had become a casualty of a weak economy. That April, while reading the Chicago Sun-Times, I came across a want-ad for flight attendants at American Eagle Airlines (the regional subsidiary of American Airlines). After initially laughing at the thought of becoming a flight attendant, I figured what more do I really have to lose. So, I applied. After making it through an initial interview scheduled at...

Well, Saturday, August 27th was quite interesting at Reagan Washington National Airport. You have to give credit to all the airline employees that made it their goal to get as many passengers onto the planes available for departure that day.

By 11am the rains started, by 2pm anyone at the airport knew that a very menacing storm was approaching, and fast!

However, it was also a day when some unique requests were made. At about 6:15pm, as I...

Earlier this month (May 2010), DCA (Washington Reagan National Airport) suffered some severe weather and forced the airlines to make some decisions on whether to keep their airplanes waiting out on the runways and tarmacs or pull them back to the gate due to the new "passenger bill of rights." Remember, if an airliner spends more than three hours on the tarmac, the airline risks a fine of $27,500 per passenger on that specific flight. The airlines...
